I got this book after reading "A Quick and Easy Guide to Trans and Queer Identities," recommended by my nonbinary sibling. That book was funny, intelligent, and patient, so I thought I'd get this one to try it out. This book, however, seems very adversarial. It's almost like the nb author is trying to pick a fight with the reader. I don't mind careful correction, as that's what I bought it for, but the way this comes across is that you're being scolded for literally nothing. In picking up this book, it should be understood that the reader is making a good-faith effort to learn more about something they may not be very familiar with. Instead, it felt like "every cis person is the enemy." Perhaps because this is not my personal life experience it didn't resonate with me the same as it would with an enby, but I wouldn't have anticipated being insulted while trying to learn. The good, valuable information was drowned out by the petulant blanket criticism of the nb author. I would not recommend this to anyone, least of all someone who is newly introduced to nb personalities/identities/language/etc. It reeks of resentment, and that's not how I'd want my identity explored by people who are seeking to learn. I cannot use this book to explain gender neutral pronouns to people who don't already understand them, because in the FIRST panels, it states that anyone who reads it and doesn't agree with everything it says deserves to be hit in the face (and possibly burned).It creates a 'with us or against us' black-and-white false dichotomy that is incompatible with education, and demanding compassion while simultaneously withholding compassion is self defeating.My non-woke friends, family members and coworkers are not evil people. They, like everyone, grew up in a society that indoctrinated them with false ideas, and they, like everyone, deserve compassion. Maybe not from Archie - that may be asking too much, but that is where allies like Tristan have a role - they have enough distance from the subject that they can to help the uneducated work through their ignorance.But even more generally, for LGBTQ+ readers and allies, that kind of violent opening shows a disrespect for, and distrust of, the reader.I hope that the authors can produce a second edition that demonstrates the kind of compassion that we all deserve, the kind of compassion that I want non-LGBTQ+ people to have when they meet someone who uses They/Them.There are plenty of rants about bigots out there. I need a patient introduction to the subject that I can actually hand out to people who are simply products of their culture and are willing to listen and change, if they feel respected.
