The story is the first in a new series, Andrews Family Saga, and is a clean western historical-based book with some mild Christian references. By no means is it preachy, but it does reference God, church, and Christian principles. The story is full of angst, mystery, suspense, danger, friendships, and even new beginnings. It is about having the past resurrected and emerging like the phoenix out of the fire. It is about doing the right thing and fighting injustice.Widow Emma Jones left her life back east, one that she cannot, nor would want to return to. She is a haunted woman with secrets that she would rather stay buried. She thought she was starting a new life as a mail-order bride, but shortly into her recent marriage to Adam, a riding accident will claim his life. Now, Emma is alone in the world, living on their property and existing but not living.Clayton Andrews was Adam's friend, and in many ways, he feels it is his duty to honor his late friend and help out his widow, Emma. What a shock to go by and check on her and see she has had a fire—one that could have been devastating. He admires her strength and determination but is sadden she doesn't want to accept a neighbors help. The story's plot will have plenty of mystery and suspense, a touch of danger, and one man so devious and determined to get his way. Emma is constantly harangued by the neighboring rancher, Jacob Matheson, who insinuates things in subtle ways. He shows up every few days trying to wear Emma down with offers to buy her out—but even that changes from suggestions to threats. A mishap while visit the Andrews ranch will bring into question her nursing skills during a shooting. All she wants is to live her life peacefully, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Clay wants to be her friend, help her out, but she rejects all his offers and assistance.Clay: "I just can't figure out the best way to help her. She keeps refusing my offers."Elsie: "Maybe she should get married. Then she would have protection and Mr. Matheson would leave her alone."Clay: "I—I'm not sure that's the best solution for her. At least not right now. Better to wait and see how things play out."Elsie: "Whatever happens, Clay, I know you will do the right thing. You always do."Dale: "From the expressions flashing across your face, I would say that you are struggling with knowing whether this calls for forgiveness or vengeance."Clay: "Justice. You may be right. I am struggling a little. I can't help feeling that we need to catch them in order to protect others.Dale: "By others, you mean Emma Jones, of course."How far will an evil person go to try and run Emma Jones out of town and get her property—the property that she and Adam worked together—the property that meant so much to her late husband? What is it about this little piece of land that has Matheson so adamant about owning it? The man worried Emma—his offers, to insulations, and now threats."Don’t say I didn’t warn you, I am in a habit of accomplishing my goals, Mrs. Jones.”The story will keep the pages turning with the good, the bad, and the evilness of people. Clay and the Andrews family are true friends, and even when she denies she needs help, they still help her—and keep the offer of friendship. Danger comes calling, and the patriarch of the Andrews family is injured, and that doesn’t just affect the Andrews; it affects Emma too. Who and why are quickly figured out—but what is the actual reason? Will Clay realize his feelings for Emma before it is too late? Has Matheson finally won? Will justice be served?Clay: “You are so strong. You don’t really need me. You never did. But I do need you. And I think we could be really good together. Let me take care of you. Give yourself a chance to be taken care of.”Emma: “Yes, Clay. I would love to be taken care of by you. And I would like to take care of you, too. I think we could be good for one another. I have so far to go. I’ve been running for so long, I’m not certain if I know how to stop. But I can see now that I have been running from God as well as from the past. I can’t do that anymore. Help me to stop running, Clay.”Clay: “I will, my beautiful Emma. I’ll give you a reason to stay.”The story is well-written and kept the pages turning as the mystery, suspense unfolds. I enjoyed the characters, interaction, and look forward to more stories in this saga. Once again, another of Ms. Miller's books that I couldn't put down once I started it. The story of a woman who has a hard life who comes to realise how hard it is to go through life alone and that it can be almost as hard to accept help and love after carrying that burden for so long. This story makes me look at myself and hope for the same joy of self discovery.
